[edit] Monday July 2

[edit] Reading Up on the Urban Sensing Program:

-PEIR: Personal Environmental Impact Report

Activities: -Purchases; commutes; daily habits; consumption; waste production EX: air quality assessment

Systems:

  • Mobile phones/ software interface
    • sensing & modeling; output data
    • "spatiotemporal" patterns
    • INFORM & ADVISE

Impact: -Driver behavior/conditions -Health/ exercise--> obesity (activity patterns) -personal exposure assesment modles

[edit] Initial Meeting With Jeff & Elena

    • Mtg today at 4pm in room 3563 (Debora's office)
  • Sensor Base (data) -need a tour
  • Need and initial model of location
    • % time in zones
    • % time near schools etc.
    • est. duration- how to do that
    • use maps from Andrew
    • how much time & sensitive zoning sites
  • Timeline needed- give a presentation at the end of the week??
  • ArcGIS model of traces
  • Data by Claritas
    • demographics

[edit] Monday Meeting at 4pm

[edit] Tuesday July 3

  • Attempt to install ArcGIS 9.2 on my laptop
    • Problems with licensing may take a few days to sort out
  • Continued research/reading on PEIR
  • Created my Wiki site

[edit] Wednesday July 4

  • *HOLIDAY*- HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!!

[edit] Thursday July 5

TO DO TODAY:

  • Complete "Authorization to Recharge for UCLA Software Licenses" form
  • Continue brainstorming mapping ideas/ data presentation

[edit] Elgethun 2003

  • Children's health using GPS data- potential exposure to environmental contaminates
  • Areas: Vehicle, house, school, business, outdoors
  • the workings of GPS satellites and beacons
  • GPS systems will not work as well inside buildings- need for direct sight

[edit] Curry 2004

  • Emergency response dispatch systems --> Safety (est 1968)
  • Surveillance vs 'privacy'
  • Changes in the emergency response system (nation-wide use of 9-1-1)
  • Public Service Access Point (PSAP)

[edit] Understanding The Geoid and Datums

Image:GEOID.gif

Latitude-longitude values are measured on the earth and mathematically leveled to the geoid. This process does not affect the horizontal positions of points. From the geoid, points are then calculated to corresponding positions on the surface of a spheroid. This process does affect horizontal positions. (Image and description from ESRI Virtual Campus: Understanding Map Projections and Coordinate Systems.)

Image:Datum example.gif

Left: the spheroid is oriented to the geoid to preserve accurate measurements for North America. Right: the spheroid is oriented to preserve accurate measurements for Europe. The problems of orienting the spheroid to the geoid and choosing a spheroid are interrelated, since a single spheroid does not fit all parts of the geoid equally well.(Image and description from ESRI Virtual Campus: Understanding Map Projections and Coordinate Systems.)

[edit] Applicable Earth-Centered Datums

World Geodetic System of 1984 (WGS84): GPS coordinates are based on this datum, and it is most commonly used for global GIS data.

North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83): This is a correction to NAD27 coordinates and is an earth-centered datum rather than local datum like NAD27. NAD83 has similar coordinates to WGS84 and so they can be used interchangeably.

[edit] Thursday July 12

  • ArcGIS- imputing the data points for User 7 over the land use base map
  • Did a spatial join of the data points from SensorBase for user 7 and the the land uses from the base map courtesy of SCAG (Southern California Association of Governments)
  • exported the spatial join to a .csv file for Jason and Elena- zone specific (10 zones total)
    • Zones: Agriculture, Commercial, Industrial, Open Space & Recreation, Public Facilities, Residential, Transit and Utility, Under Construction, Vacant.

[edit] Thursday Meeting at 2pm

  • Campaign presentations
  • Discussion of privacy and security

[edit] Monday July 23

  • Continue work on the PEIR pilot campaign documentation
  • PowerPoint presentation of new traces
  • Discuss accuracy of AQMD stations

[edit] Thursday July 26

  • How to determine tracings between large time gaps (use of roads and possible paths?)
  • use of road maps to determine path taken?

[edit] Monday August 6

  • Meeting 4pm- Discuss 1, 3, and 6 month plans for PEIR

[edit] Meeting Notes

  • Discuss the presentation to Nokia on July 31st
    • it was useful from their perspective-- shared the overarching points of PEIR -- showed why PEIR is meaningful for individuals-- more ideas for a start to finish application -- GROUP BREAKOUT were helpful but broad-- discussed intent to deploy to millions of people-- how and why people get involved-- there were 3 important things or targets: PEIR will serve as a travel diary coupled with social networking tools. There has to be an incentive and GUI that draws people in.
    • Need to make a system that people will use (personal vs. social/ cost vs. benefit)
    • Outputs looking for?
    • Failed to establish what inferences we can make based on the data collected
  • What can we MEASURE??: energy use, emissions (near places), air quality
  • 1, 3, and 6 month PLANS:
    • By August: Develop a prototype (end to end prototype- we do what we CAN FINISH in 3 months)
    • By November: take on the UI component
    • By February: Position papers
